THE EASTERN OPEN CHALLENGE

We have been advised that the two Spalding meetings nominated as Eastern Open Challenge rounds will no longer qualify for the Challenge. The Challenge will continue to be open to all NASA club members and will be held over four rounds, two each at St Neots and Cambridge. Drivers must contest at least one round at each venue to qualify for points. The future of the Challenge will be reviewed at the end of this season and the League will discuss with Spalding (and any other regional clubs that may be interested) how the original idea could be revitalised.

NATIONAL ALLOCATIONS

The League’s allocations for the National Championships have been advised by NASA as follows:

CLASS 1 - 3 places (INCLUDING Carl Whitfield as defending Champion)

                + joint 12th reserve

CLASS 2 - 2 places

CLASS 3 - 3 places (INCLUDING Barry Almond as defending Champion)

                + joint 7th reserve

CLASS 4 - 2 places + joint 8th reserve

CLASS 5 - 2 places + joint 4th reserve

CLASS 6 - 2 places + joint 10th reserve

CLASS 7 - 2 places

CLASS 8 - 2 places

CLASS 9 - 2 places + joint 13th reserve

CLASS 10 - 1 place + joint 3rd reserve

The “joint reserve” places will be clarified nearer to the event. Please note, however, that NASA count these reserve places “backwards” - eg if there are five joint first reserves, they’ll be listed as joint fifth. If you qualify for one of these reserve positions it will be worth “provisionally” accepting it and you’ll be advised later of the probability of actually getting a place.

All drivers who have qualified for the Nationals will be individually contacted by the League Secretary as soon as possible after 15 June to confirm their attendance.

UPDATE 9 APRIL:

The meeting on 13 April is ON. This will be the first National Qualifying round for the East Anglian League. All visiting drivers are welcome - please note that we do not run separate National Qualifying races, so all drivers can participate in the whole meeting.

Please check for updates if the weather deteriorates,  as the meeting will not be run if it is likely to cause serious damage to the track surface, which has been extensively prepared for the 2008 season. As at Wednesday 9 April the track is dry and looking good.

Club members are required for track erection on Saturday - committee members will be on site from 9am.

Please arrive early for scrutineering on Sunday - especially restricted class cars as your engine seals will need to be fitted/verified before you are allowed to race and score points.

Heats and grid positions for all classes will be pre-drawn and displayed at pits control, so please make sure you know which race and grid you are in before lining up.

Any changes will be posted first on the Yorkshire Dales Forum - use the link above. We look forward to seeing you at Wyboston.

Cambridge Autograss Club is delighted to welcome among its new members for 2008, Jonathan Lewis, best known as the man behind the international racing team, and now formula racing car constructor, Comtec Racing. Jonathan’s career has taken him from an early schooling on the Yorkshire grass tracks, to winning the National Mini Se7en Championship at the age of 19. After switching from driving to team management he headed the all-conquering works Van Diemen Formula Ford team before forming Comtec. In 2006 Comtec won the World Series by Renault Championship, with driver Alx Danielsson, and in 2008 Comtec have launched their all-new Formula Ford chassis. Yet Jonathan has always found time to enjoy grass roots racing and his last brief foray into Autograss saw him win the Class 10 National Championship in 2001. Now based in Norfolk, Jonathan has bought the new ARD Class 8 as debuted by Antony Ross in the NEC live arena. Look out for CA21 this year, if Jonathan ever finds a free weekend to race it.

ST NEOTS 13 MAY WAS CANCELLED!

wpb8432e37.gif

The heavy rain the week before the event left the track flooded and rather than risk ruining the track for the rest of the year, the decision was taken on Friday afternoon to cancel. The cancelled meeting should have been round 1 of the Eastern Open Challenge - due to the crowded fixture list it's not practical to re-schedule this, so the challenge will be contested over the remaining five rounds.
